Melvill Road, Falmouth

A rear extension and full ground-floor reconfiguration of a 1920s house.
We were approached by our client to create a family-oriented space with an enhanced relationship to the garden. The scheme involved extensive landscaping and includes a library, a kitchen-diner, a utilities space and a shower room.

The interior uses a monochrome palette of geometric encaustic tiles with colour accents on the bespoke ply furniture, including a window seat and kitchen storage. A light & spacious dining area opens onto the exterior terrace and a floor-level slate-lined pond through 3m bi-folding doors. The movement of daylight was integral to the design, which features extensive glazing on the south elevation, maximising solar gain in winter.

The design uses solar reactive glazing & timber sun shades incorporated into the pergola to minimise overheating in the summer months. The works increased the house's energy efficiency by combining solar with intelligent household technologies, in collaboration with the PETE Project at Eden. The use of natural materials, Scottish Larch, Slate and a Sedum roof on the exterior creates a natural cohesion with the garden.
